New media is the term used to refer to anything digital or computerised that disseminates information or that is used for communication. This takes into considerarion the internet, your blackberry smartphone as well as that new computer game you just bought last christmas! Until around the 1980's media depended on print and analog models to get information out to a news-starved public, but with the growth and manipulation of various technologies (such as the digitization of photography and cinematography) within the last 25 years or so, there is now a marked difference in how news and other information is created, manipulated and disseminated.

New (digitized) media is being used to transform almost every aspect of human life. Let's take a look at digital technology's influence on the various ways in which we communicate.

Digital Technology and Photography

The printing industry is not the only thing drastically affected by the development of digital technology. The field of photography now abounds with unlimited possibilities thanks to the use of digital technology, which offers a wide variety of colours as opposed to using traditional photographing machinery. But that's not all! All you photography buffs now have at your fingertips express photography (minimum processing time of 3 minutes!) through use of the digital camera.

Of course, it is always important to choose the right camera, but many digital cameras now have automatic features designed to control the quality of photographs. Keep in mind that you must still possess sensitivity when it comes to your subjects since you are ultimately responsible for capturing the shot, but aren't you happier with the digital camera by your side? Digital technology also makes it way easier and much faster to transfer data from camera to computer, and this aids in storing and displaying digital images taken with your digital camera. In addition, those holiday pictures you took last summer can easily be printed from your computer with the use of various digital printers. Remember, though: digital photography uses high-resolution images, so it is important that your computer has enough space for them as well as a reliable CPU so that image processing is efficient.
